Workplace & Community Education

Your workplace can help save lives!

A simple morning tea or 15 minute meeting is all it takes. A little effort for a big outcome!

We have run education with workplaces like Cotton On, TAC (Transport Accident Commission), Telstra, The Alfred Hospital, right down to boutique gift stores and smaller medical offices with many people joining the donor registry as a result! We also work with different community groups such a religious institutions and have run education with the Indian Sikh community, church groups, schools, universities and more (see our events page to see some of the workplaces and groups we’ve worked with). Any community group or club can get involved. No matter the size of your workplace or community group, we can support you to educate people at your workplace/community about stem cell donation and encourage those who are eligible to join. There’s no one size fits all and we are flexible to support your activities in the way that best suits your organisation. Some ideas of how your workplace/group can get involved include:

  • Morning/afternoon tea

  • Host a “B-B-Cure – BBQ”

  • “Superhero Stem Cell Day” - dress up theme and decorate the workplace

  • Casual day fundraising

  • Or any combination of the above plus more! Get creative with your ideas and we’ll give you the information and resources you need to help run your activity!

Our goal is to educate people about stem cell donation, so in and around any of the activities you choose to do, we encourage sharing the information throughout your organisation in many different ways; for example posters in tea rooms, an article in the company newsletter or other internal communications, play a short video during a meeting or morning tea, share through the company’s social media account and more. We will give you the resources and tools needed to educate the staff/organisation members and encourage those who are eligible to join, with some groups completing their cheek swab at work to join the donor registry (dependant on availability).

Interested in getting your workplace involved?

Fill in this webform and we’ll get in touch! It’s best to nominate a key contact person as we rely on someone who knows the ins and outs of the organisation to help spread the information. This person will be the main driver to facilitate the activities and we work closely with you and provide everything you need to educate your workplace.

Our target demographic

Anyone who is eligible is welcome to join the donor registry! Raising awareness and educating everyone about stem cell donation is always important, but to really help find more lifesaving stem cell matches for patients, we must focus on improving the diversity of Australia’s blood stem cell donor registry. This is because a patient is more likely to find their match with someone who shares a similar ethnic background to them. Unfortunately these groups are grossly under-represented on the donor registry, many groups have less than 1% representation. On the other hand over 80% of people registered as potential donors have a North Caucasian background (typically “white”/Anglo-Saxon heritage Australians). This is a problem in multicultural Australia and many patients are struggling to find their match due to their heritage, even those with a mixed heritage. Additionally we focus our work on targeting young males as biologically they make the ideal donor. Essentially the science says that to increase matching we need more younger donors (aged 18 to 35), more young males and more people with a culturally diverse or indigenous background to join. See our common questions page to learn more. We still encourage all workplaces and community groups to get involved, no matter the demographic. Simply raising awareness is very important and there are many different ways your workplace can get involved to help our mission!

Promote diversity and a happy & more engaged workplace!

Workplaces and community groups can help spread this important message to save lives and also improve their “employer” and company brand by showing it embraces diversity, promotes inclusiveness and celebrates our multicultural society! We believe the workplace and community groups are a great place for people to learn about the cause as people are already in a setting where they can be engaged and ready to hear the educational messages. And according to a Business News article, “70% of Australian workers are willing to accept less pay to work for a company whose values are aligned with their own...and often this translates as work practices that support corporate and community responsibility”. You can promote a happy and more engaged workforce and save lives at the same time!

Decorate your workplace in Superhero and/or Multicultural Theme!

Get creative with a multicultural themed morning or afternoon tea!

Dress up in “Superhero” theme!

Think outside the square when dressing up…superheros come in all shapes and sizes. Apart from your Superman, Wonder Woman and other comic book heroes, people can also dress up in every day superhero outfits like doctors, nurses, fireman, lifeguards and more! What about movie heroes? Like Harry Potter, James Bond and Indiana Jones. Let your imagination run wild!
